00:07 - Where's Charlie?

00:08 (speaking in foreign language)

00:10 This is Charlie and Jack.

00:12 Charlie is a horse that I rescued.

00:15 He's extremely old, he's 40 years old.

00:17 He's lost the sight of his eyes.

00:19 When he lost his eyesight,

00:21 we decided that we would put him down.

00:23 But we didn't get a credit to the relationships

00:26 among our animals.

00:28 Because as soon as Charlie lost his eyesight,

00:30 Jack, our old buddy who was 16,

00:33 he couldn't continue seeing Charlie's eyes.

00:36 (dramatic music)

00:38 One time, there was a tornado and there was a migration.

00:43 (dramatic music)

00:46 Jack came to the house screaming.

00:53 And it's like he was trying to tell us something.

00:55 He started to walk in front of the door,

00:57 and so we opened the door and he just went to take off.

01:00 And what we found was that the tornado

01:03 had hit a tree in a circle.

01:06 And my blind horse in the middle of it,

01:08 and there was no way for him to get out.

01:10 So Jack had to show his time to God

01:12 is to go help his buddy,

01:14 because he couldn't lead Charlie out of that.

01:16 After that day, I've no longer worried about Charlie.

01:21 (dramatic music)

01:30 The reason I knew that Jack knew that Charlie was blind

01:33 is because when Charlie lost his eyesight,

01:36 Jack would lead him in his sight.

01:40 When Charlie lost his sight, he was completely blind,

01:42 Jack started to walk in front of him.

01:44 There's a patch of grass that grows in the back

01:51 of the property, and it's hard to get.

01:55 And for no apparent reason,

01:58 Jack will take Charlie back,

02:00 he lets him run the race,

02:02 and when Charlie's done, Jack leads him back.

02:04 When they're leading back,

02:05 typically they're going to be foraging along the way,

02:07 but he doesn't do that.

02:09 He stays on the trail.

02:11 He lines up up in front of Charlie,

02:13 keeps Charlie within 10 or 20 feet of him,

02:16 and he runs him slowly.

02:18 Charlie can tell the difference

02:24 between Jack's footsteps

02:26 and the ones of the horses or the men.

02:28 Charlie knows those footsteps like his own heartbeat.

02:33 Once Charlie had Jack passed from the trail,

02:55 he changed his mind.

02:57 He knew Jack was going to lead him

02:59 to a place he was familiar with,

03:02 and he was good.

03:04 We say that humans are only ones

03:11 with the instinct of compassion.

03:13 I say that's wrong.

03:15 I say that some men are more compassionate than others,

03:18 some animals are more compassionate than others,

03:20 but they're all capable.

03:23 We all have the same instinct,

03:25 Jack gets nothing in exchange for this relationship.

03:28 Charlie can know that he's protecting him

03:30 or providing for him,

03:31 so what Jack is happy to do

03:33 is protecting his friend.

03:34 Period, end of story.

03:36 There is no Charlie without Charlie.

03:42 All of the things that an old-sided horse had,

03:46 he has a very strong relationship with an old goat.

03:49 After 16 years of friendship,

03:51 Charlie was very upset.

03:53 Jack walked up to his friend

03:59 and put his head down,

04:01 and he turned around.

04:03 And the way he went home surprised me.

04:06 I kind of expected him to have an emotional reaction,

04:09 but he really didn't.

04:11 He was very calm,

04:13 and he was very quiet.

04:15 He was very quiet.

04:17 But he really didn't.

04:19 He turned around and he went back home down the trail.

04:22 And when he was finished, he went to his favorite place

04:24 and now he was done.

04:26 At first I thought maybe he didn't understand

04:31 that Charlie's gone,

04:32 because he's never left his side.

04:34 And seeing Charlie lying down like that,

04:38 he would have gone crazy.

04:40 But he didn't alarm.

04:41 He just kind of went,

04:43 "Okay, old friend, it's over."

04:45 And very quickly he went down the hill.

04:48 I don't want people to know the story of this book

05:02 and this story of Pass Unknown.

05:04 They say that animals are just muscles and bones,

05:07 and the only thing that interests them

05:09 is to feed themselves.

05:11 I mean, who would think that a goat

05:13 could spend years taking care of a blind horse

05:16 for the only reason that this horse needed help?

05:20 These guys have so much more to live than that.

05:25 They will give you no credit for it.

05:27 We buried Charlie in a corner under the trees

05:32 where they ate now.

05:34 And you could go there in the afternoon,

05:36 and Charlie would be working,

05:37 and Jack would be laying in the sun.

05:39 That's where we put Charlie.

05:41 And soon, Jack will join them.

05:44 [music]
