00:36 - This is how he sees the world,

00:38 by sniffing the wind.

00:44 - I'm kind of taking all my energy

00:46 to get out of my pool.

00:48 (laughing)

00:51 The grizzly bear is an animal

00:53 that his claws are taught to fear.

00:55 This thing is smaller than one of us, probably.

00:59 - That capability is real.

01:00 It exists in him.

01:02 And if I take it,

01:03 I think about it all the time.

01:05 It can happen.

01:06 I gotta keep it on my toes,

01:07 and respect it,

01:09 and hope it doesn't happen.

01:11 He can move this rock.

01:11 It's a huge thing.

01:13 You know, it is one of those things

01:14 that forces humility in a bear.

01:16 He doesn't even know what he's doing.

01:19 And there's been times he's turned

01:20 around and he's trying to hug me,

01:21 so I was like, "Oh, all right."

01:23 He's got his arms around his neck.

01:25 - Yeah.

01:26 - And he got these snake knives on the end of his neck.

01:28 When he bats you on the back,

01:30 you can break bones.

01:33 He really seems very calm.

01:35 His ears are kind of forward-facing,

01:37 kind of steady.

01:38 He's just kind of moving slowly and slowly.

01:41 You know, if he gets up, he's gonna make a lot of noise,

01:43 and he's gonna start to blow really hard.

01:45 His body will get really stiff.

01:47 His ears are gonna pivot forward.

01:49 If he's angry, and he's not nervous,

01:51 his ears are gonna sit back,

01:52 and he just kind of grunts,

01:54 and he's gonna let you know.

01:56 - Yeah.

01:57 - Most animals will give you a warning

01:59 before they go out in the wild.

02:01 If you go out in the wild,

02:02 you know, if you see a bear,

02:03 his first reaction is to get scared.

02:05 He looks at you and says, "What are you gonna do?"

02:07 And you go, "Aah!"

02:09 Like almost everyone will do.

02:10 - It's worse.

02:13 If I can get so close to Brutus,

02:16 it's because he's always lived with Casey.

02:18 ♪ ♪

02:21 He was born in captivity 13 years ago

02:23 in a overpopulated reserve

02:25 that didn't have room for another grizzly.

02:28 ♪ ♪

02:30 Casey is a naturalist,

02:31 and he was used to wild animals.

02:35 He decided to save him.

02:37 ♪ ♪

02:41 - You know, you don't really ever plan

02:43 to adopt a grizzly.

02:45 He was such a special bear,

02:47 right off the bat,

02:48 just his personality,

02:49 I could see this,

02:50 I don't think you've ever seen before.

02:51 And I knew that I had to do something

02:53 to make sure that he wouldn't be put to sleep.

02:56 But fortunately, you know,

02:58 a super bear met a cool dude,

03:01 and it worked out.

03:03 ♪ ♪

03:07 Adopting Brutus changed their lives for both of them.

03:10 For 13 years, Casey and his grizzly

03:12 have been multiplying TV sets

03:14 in hopes of changing the perception

03:16 that men have of bears.

03:18 ♪ ♪

03:22 - You know, one misconception

03:23 is that we don't want to give the impression

03:25 that this is okay.

03:27 We don't give a hug to a grizzly.

03:29 But you should also not be afraid of it.

03:31 The truth is somewhere in the middle.

03:33 ♪ ♪

03:43 Because he was born in captivity,

03:45 Brutus will never be able to return to the wild.

03:48 11 years after their meeting,

03:50 Casey used the money they had earned together

03:52 to offer his bear an exclusive reserve.

03:55 ♪ ♪

03:57 Now that Brutus is an adult,

03:59 Casey can't play with him anymore.

04:01 Which doesn't stop them from being close.

04:04 But the more he detaches himself from the bear,

04:06 the more his old friend becomes unpredictable.

04:12 When Brutus was a little boy,

04:14 Casey could really get interactive with him.

04:18 ♪ ♪

04:20 But that time had long since passed.

04:22 ♪ ♪

04:25 Brutus is about 500 pounds.

04:28 That is a very, very huge animal.

04:31 ♪ ♪

04:34 Even a simple gesture of affection towards Casey

04:37 could hurt him severely,

04:39 maybe even kill him.

04:42 So what I'm seeing is not so much

04:44 the usual love and affection kind of relationship.

04:49 It's more of a personal knowledge of each other's body language,

04:53 a mutual trust and respect.

04:58 And that in itself is such a special and strong connection.

05:06 Is it sad for you that you no longer

05:08 talk to him as you did when he was little?

05:11 I miss the old days.

05:13 We had fun.

05:15 I miss him not needing me as much anymore.

05:19 Things have changed.

05:21 I find myself a lot more careful about how I behave.

05:24 I'm a lot more cautious out of respect for him.

05:30 When people, when they look at me and Brutus,

05:32 they think one of two things.

05:34 They think that guy is going to get killed one of these days.

05:37 Yes.

05:38 Or that I'm going to get killed one day.

05:40 Or that I'm a hero,

05:41 a hero that people want to be like, particularly children.

05:45 So now it's up to me to choose which one I want to be.

05:49 Right.

05:50 And I want to be a hero.

05:53 And part of that is not taking risks.

05:56 Because if something did happen, and it could,

06:00 he would be the bad guy.

06:02 And everything that I'm trying to teach people about the Grizzlies,

06:05 you know, about the nice side, the loving side of them,

06:09 that would all be erased instantly.

06:13 And I can't let that happen.

06:15 I can't.

06:16 (upbeat music)
