00:00 As far as we know, pigs can't fly, but they sure can swim.
00:06 Out here in the Bahamas, this sensational family of swine loves to get their feet wet.
00:13 So what's the story behind these guys?
00:18 Well, it depends who you ask.
00:20 Local legend has it they swam to shore following a 16th century shipwreck.
00:26 That sounds cool, but the truth is they were actually brought here as livestock from the Bahamian capital of Nassau during the 90s.
00:33 At first, there were only five pigs.
00:38 They were fed and fenced in, but when they grew larger, they somehow managed to escape.
00:44 The pigs have survived on the island ever since, and their numbers have grown to more than 30.
00:50 Locals call this spot "Pig Beach."
00:55 It gets pretty hot during the day, so they spend a lot of time in the shade.
00:59 Pigs don't have sweat glands to help them stay cool, leaving them vulnerable to heat exhaustion, sunburns, and even skin cancer.
01:08 They dig their bodies into the sand to cool down, which also protects them from harmful UV rays.
01:14 It's not quite a mud bath, but it does the trick.
01:17 And when things get real toasty, they catch some waves.
01:23 Swimming is actually instinctual to pigs.
01:26 It's just not something that most pigs ever need to do.
01:29 But the extra food floating a few feet away has them hurrying out to sea.
01:33 But there's a problem lurking in these waters.
01:37 As the pigs have grown to worldwide fame, people everywhere flock to feed them.
01:42 And while their bellies are well taken care of, no one is directly responsible for their well-being.
01:48 These pigs are feral, remember, and each mature female can birth 20-plus piglets a year.
01:54 And with all these pigs munching on the island's native plants, well, the ecosystem's balance will continue to take a beating.
02:02 But good news! Just 55 miles away, there's another beach where some of these pigs have been relocated.
02:09 And boy, do these guys have it made on that second pig beach.
02:13 They get fresh water delivered daily, and it's more accessible to tourists.
02:18 Which means, yep, you guessed it, more food.
02:22 It's a pretty sweet life in this pig paradise.
02:29 And unlike most pigs who live on farms and don't make it to their first birthday,
02:34 these piggies have the promise of growing to be old,
02:37 fat,
02:41 and forever famous on Instagram.
