00:02 There are thousands of bee species in the world,
00:06 but they all share one characteristic.
00:08 They all collect pollen as a source of protein
00:11 for their offspring.
00:12 The larvae that develop in each chamber of a nest
00:23 will live off the pollen
00:24 for the first few days of their lives.
00:29 But do you know what the difference is
00:31 between a bee and a wasp?
00:33 One difference is wasps use different materials
00:40 to build their nests, for instance, grass.
00:43 But the main difference is wasps, as opposed to bees,
00:57 don't use pollen as the source of protein.
01:00 They use meat.
01:03 A wasp places a tranquilized grasshopper
01:17 into each chamber of the nest.
01:19 The grasshopper is narcotized, not dead,
01:22 which means it will stay fresh
01:24 until the day the larva hatches from the egg
01:26 and consumes it.

01:30 After the larvae have feasted on the insects,
01:32 they stay in diapause for the winter
01:34 and hatch the following spring.
