Reverse Overlap Putting Grip Explained

00:05 I'm an advanced PGA professional,

00:06 and I'm here at West Hill Golf Club

00:09 to talk to you about possibly changing your putting grip.

00:13 And I'm gonna talk to you today

00:14 about the reverse overlap grip.

00:16 So how do you hold your putter grip?

00:19 A lot of people would look down and go,

00:20 "What do you mean?

00:21 "How do I grip my putter?

00:22 "I grip it the same way I'd normally grip my clubs,

00:25 "by interlocking or overlapping."

00:27 Now, that grip is designed to help you

00:29 to achieve a bit of whip through the ball,

00:31 so give you a bit of a handsy action in the golf swing.

00:34 In putting, we don't want that.

00:35 So it's a really good idea to maybe look at changing this.

00:39 A solid option would be the reverse overlap grip.

00:43 And all we're doing here is we're taking the palms

00:45 from working together with the main swing,

00:47 where we would achieve a bit of a flick of the wrists,

00:50 to turning them away from each other,

00:52 putting the club more into the palm,

00:54 and sitting very softly,

00:56 this index finger of the top hand over my cuticles.

00:59 I tend to call this my cuticle grip when I'm coaching.

01:02 It gives a lovely soft hold on the putter.

01:05 I'm in control, but I can now rock from the shoulders

01:08 back and through, the nice fluid action,

01:11 rather than giving it a bang.

01:13 So what we achieve by taking the hands out of the equation

01:16 and going hands-free, is a nice, smooth stroke.

01:20 That'll really help us with distance control,

01:22 it'll help us keep the club face square,

01:24 and hold more putts, ultimately,

01:26 and who doesn't want to hold more putts?

01:28 What you want to make sure of with this grip,

01:30 is that there's still no squeeze in it.

01:32 You're not squeezing the putter for dear life.

01:35 You're letting that putter rest,

01:36 and then rocking from the shoulders in a nice, smooth action.

01:41 You're then determining how far the putt goes

01:43 by how much back and through you give it.

01:46 So the reverse overlap grip is gonna really make

01:48 those longer putts much easier to control distance-wise.

01:51 You'll find it smoothly rolls on the green,

01:54 rather than jumping and skidding,

01:55 which is what tends to happen when we give it a hit.

01:57 It's worth remembering as well,

01:58 that this grip might not be for you.

02:01 Just because your best golfing pal has started using it,

02:04 doesn't necessarily mean it's gonna work for you.

02:06 So you need to give it a little bit of time,

02:08 get used to it, but also,

02:11 if your putting is really, really good, don't change it.

02:14 Stick with it, and take confidence in the fact

02:17 that you're already taking the winnings

02:19 from your playing partners.
