00:12 This time after a video of two Kuki women being assaulted and paraded naked in full
00:17 public view went viral.
00:19 The alleged mastermind behind the incident has been arrested today after huge fury and
00:24 outcry.
00:25 The ethnic clashes that started since May 3rd have perhaps reached its most abhorrent
00:30 point.
00:31 In this video, we bring to you a recap of the most crucial flashpoint in this conflict
00:35 between Kuki and Mehti tribes in the state.
00:44 The ethnic clashes between the majority Mehti community and the tribal Kukis have a long
00:48 history.
00:49 On April 28, the tribal groups in Manipur had called for a 12-hour total shutdown in
00:55 protest against the state government's survey on reserved forests or protected forests and
01:00 eviction from villages on the day of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh's visit to Chura
01:05 Chandpur.
01:06 The recent tension escalated after a tribal solidarity march was held in the state's
01:10 hill districts on May 3rd to protest against the Mehti's demand for scheduled tribe status.
01:15 Very soon, the situation aggravated and large-scale violence was reported almost all across the
01:20 state.
01:21 Violence first erupted during a rally in the Torbung area of Chura Chandpur.
01:27 Next day, that is on 4th of May, fresh incidents of violence in Imphal were reported.
01:32 More vandalism, destruction of properties and clashes between Mehti's and tribals were
01:36 in the news.
01:37 The Rapid Action Force was deployed along with the Army, CRPF, Assam Rifles and State
01:42 Police to contain violence.
01:44 On the same day, the government issued a shoot-at-sight order for extreme cases.
01:49 Very soon, students and common people began fleeing to neighbouring state Assam as the
01:53 situation began to worsen.
01:55 On 30th of May, Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the tribe-torn state and had a wide
02:01 range of discussions with prominent civil society members, intellectuals, retired army
02:05 officials, etc.
02:07 He had announced the formation of a peace committee to oversee the process of transition
02:11 to peace.
02:12 He had also announced the formation of a judicial commission to probe into the ethnic violence.
02:17 Despite these measures, normalcy continued to elude the state.
02:21 Then, Rahul Gandhi visited Manipur.
02:24 But his visit was marked by drama, confrontation and political bickering.
02:28 Rahul Gandhi, who had arrived at Imphal, was proceeding to Chura Chandpur, one of the epicentres
02:33 of the ethnic violence, when his convoy was stopped by security forces due to the possibility
02:38 of a grenade attack.
02:40 The incident sparked off a row between the Congress and the BJP, with the Grand Old Party
02:44 alleging that the Saffron Party did not want anyone to enter Manipur.
02:49 The BJP dismissed those accusations and contended that Rahul Gandhi was informed earlier about
02:54 the law and order situation in the state and the environment was not conducive for him
02:58 to travel on the road.
03:00 Later, Union Minister R.K.
03:02 Ranjan Singh's house was set ablaze by a mob in Imphal on June 15.
03:06 The minister was not present at his residence at the time of the incident.
03:09 He later said that the law and order had totally failed in the state.
03:13 Similar incidents of houses of BJP MLAs being torched continued throughout.
03:18 On July 4, a group of armed miscreants made an attempt to loot weapons from the India
03:23 Reserve Battalion located in a village in the Thowbal district.
03:26 A 27-year-old man was killed in the clash between the miscreants and security officials
03:31 and an Assam Rifle Jawan was shot at.
03:34 Just few days back, the Supreme Court had refused to interfere with a Manipur High Court
03:38 order directing the state government to partially restore the internet.
03:42 A bench of Supreme Court judges led by Chief Justice D.Y.
03:45 Chandrachud, however, allowed the state government to approach the High Court and inform it about
03:50 the difficulties in implementing the order.
