Cavendish Pre-race interview - Stage 7 - Tour de France 2023

  • l’année dernière
The Tour de France 2023 will hold its Grand Départ in the Basque Country, with a first stage in Bilbao on 1st July, and will finish in Paris on 23rd July, on completion of a 3,404-km route that will tackle the difficult slopes of the country’s five mountain ranges. The battle for the Yellow Jersey will witness a decisive and emotional episode on the Puy de Dôme, where a stage finish will be held 35 years after the victory of Denmark’s Johnny Weltz. The return to this legendary climb will be accompanied by the rise in importance of sites that will mark the Tours of the future, such as the Grand Colombier or the Col de la Loze. The sole time-trial on the Tour de France in 2023 will take place over 22 kilometres between Passy and the Combloux ski resort in Haute-Savoie. The sprinters will also have the opportunity to express themselves on finishes in Bordeaux, Limoges, Moulins, before the grand finale on the Champs-Elysées.

00:00 Sure, I can. Mark, you have a very precise memory of things. What do you remember of
00:07 2010, Bobby?
00:09 That one. Actually, I'd been ill that day. We'd suffered through the Pyrenees and I'd
00:14 had a fever. I couldn't eat the day before. I didn't even know if I'd start. I suffered,
00:21 suffered, suffered. I didn't feel great. We'd been a difficult tour, actually, for everyone.
00:29 Everyone was a bit tired. Actually, there was a lot less sprint training then. We were
00:36 able to take it off. I'd lost Mark Venture early on in the tour. The boys just did a
00:45 good job of getting me to the last K's and I was just about following the wheel. Cervelo
00:49 had a good lead out there when it was just about then. Pataki jumped early, so I jumped
00:52 on his wheel and I went straight past him and won by a fair distance, actually. It was
00:57 a nice memory.
00:58 So basically, the situation is very similar to today after the Pyrenees. You suffered
01:03 in the Pyrenees, you have an opportunity in Bodø.
01:05 Yes, we'll try. It's earlier on in the race now, but I've got good memory that we'll definitely
01:12 try.
01:13 Sixth, fifth of the previous sprints. What can we hope for today?
01:20 I don't know. I think it'll be a relatively quiet day on television for people, but with
01:28 a beautiful sprint in one of the historical sprint towns. All the big sprinters have won
01:33 there, including the last British sprinter before me, Barry Holden. It'll be good to
01:40 try and win there again.
01:41 Plus, the family's here. That's a special motivation.
01:44 Yes, it really, really is. They've come to start and they're driving to finish. They
01:48 came and saw me in Pau last night, actually, which is really nice. A whole mass, loads
01:51 of kids. It's lovely. It's great for them.
