01:03 - Wildebeest is the most common animal
01:05 that can be encountered in Tanzania.
01:07 These animals weighing between 150 and 300 kilograms
01:14 are a delicious meal for predators.
01:17 These wildebeests, who migrate once or twice a year
01:22 due to drought, encounter many different dangers in nature.
01:26 In Africa, wildebeest rank at the top of preferred prey,
01:33 accounting for nearly half of the lion prey
01:35 in the Serengeti, followed by zebra.
01:38 Since lions are strongly territorial,
01:44 the wildebeest herds will only have to contend
01:46 with a single pride as they migrate through any one area.
01:50 So once the pride has killed,
01:52 the herd should have a break until it crosses
01:54 into the next pride's territory.
01:56 These animals, which travel in large flocks
02:02 in places such as Serengeti and Masai Mara,
02:05 are also very successful in terms of defense.
02:08 It can repel opponents with its horns
02:13 and strong feet.
02:15 It is a creature that does not give up easily
02:20 even in a lion attack.
02:22 A wildebeest's muscles are two and a half times
02:27 more powerful than a car engine.
02:29 It is the secret to its epic annual trek
02:36 when around 1.5 million of them migrate across Africa
02:40 in search of grazing and water.
02:43 (upbeat music)
02:45 Wildebeest can travel up to 50 miles
02:47 over five days without drinking.
02:50 A human can die in three days without water.
02:55 The wildebeest converts two until thirds of energy
02:59 into work and waste only a third as heat.
03:02 That is substantially more efficient
03:06 than both comparably sized animals such as cows
03:09 and small creatures like rabbits.
03:12 (upbeat music)
03:14 And it's all down to the wildebeest's remarkable muscles
03:17 that prevent it overheating.
03:18 Major predators that feed on wildebeest include
03:23 the lion, hyena, African wild dog, cheetah, leopard,
03:28 and crocodile, which seem to favor the wildebeest
03:31 over other prey.
03:32 It is important to be strong to win a war.
03:41 Wildebeest are very strong and can inflict
03:44 landlord injury even to a lion.
03:46 The African buffalo, also known as the Cape buffalo,
04:02 is a large African bovine native to Sub-Saharan Africa.
04:10 African buffaloes are not related to domestic cattle
04:13 and are only distantly related to other larger bovines.
04:17 Unlike its Asian equivalent, the water buffalo,
04:25 the African buffalo has never been domesticated
04:28 due to its wild temperament.
04:30 In a one-on-one battle between an adult lion
04:36 and an adult buffalo, the buffalo almost always win.
04:40 The explanation for this is that an adult lion
04:47 weighs just 400 to 500 pounds on average,
04:50 while an adult buffalo weights 1,800 to 2,500 pounds.
04:55 The only way a lion can defeat an adult buffalo
05:03 is to bite its throat or windpipe hard.
05:06 (dramatic music)
05:09 Only when the buffalo is knocked off its feet
05:13 will this be accomplished.
05:15 The massive weight of an adult buffalo
05:24 makes it almost impossible for a lion
05:27 to knock it off its feet.
05:28 Only a pride of lions can overwhelm an adult buffalo,
05:34 and even then it takes time,
05:36 and the buffalo typically manages to flee.
05:39 Even if they are fleeing rather than fighting,
05:45 buffalo are difficult to kill,
05:47 and it usually takes a large lion pride to bring them down.
05:50 That isn't even taking into account
05:56 what the buffalo would do to lions.
05:58 Due mainly to its violent nature
06:04 and super strength, even working as a group
06:07 is difficult enough to bring down a buffalo.
06:09 The buffalo's horns won't kill a lion outright,
06:16 but they're so powerful that they can easily fling lions
06:19 into the air or away from them.
06:21 Any result would cause a significant amount of damage
06:27 in addition to the wound caused by the horn.
06:30 (dramatic music)
06:33 Even though there have been instances of single lions
06:39 killing full-grown buffalo,
06:41 most prides have failed to kill the adults.
06:44 When a calf is attacked by three or four lions,
06:51 the entire herd of buffalo always gathers and charges them.
06:59 The lions were forced to flee.
07:01 In certain cases, the majority of the lions
07:04 were able to flee, but one unfortunate lion was cornered.
07:08 After that, things go bad for the lion.
07:17 It was surrounded by a herd of enraged male cape buffalo.
07:25 (dramatic music)
07:28 Budding and kicking it while tossing it into the air.
07:34 In such event, lions are sometimes killed.
07:42 Lions are famous for being the king of the jungle.
07:55 (dramatic music)
07:57 Their fearsome stature and reputation
08:00 place them near the top of the food chain.
08:02 In general, there are two known methods
08:10 that lions employ to hunt their prey.
08:12 The first one is by stalking them.
08:21 (dramatic music)
08:23 This is the primary way that they hunt,
08:28 which is to stay hidden for as long as possible
08:30 while they approach their prey.
08:32 This is another advantage that the lioness has over the male
08:39 in that their bodies are slimmer,
08:41 allowing them to stay hidden in the grass longer.
08:48 Lionesses also work together when they hunt
08:51 by surrounding their prey as they stay hidden.
08:53 Eventually, though, the prey will notice
09:00 or hear the approaching lion,
09:02 in which it will become a chase for them both.
09:04 Once the lion catches up to the prey,
09:12 they use their powerful claws to maul at their prey
09:15 and crush their necks,
09:16 leaving them paralyzed to be taken back to the lion's home.
09:20 The other way that lions hunt
09:26 is a little more straightforward.
09:28 This is when the male lion also joins the hunt together
09:36 with the lionesses.
09:37 For the second method,
09:44 there is no hiding or stalking involved.
09:46 They go for the big prey and then corner it strategically.
09:50 Once the prey is cornered,
09:56 the lion comes in face to face to fight with the animal.
10:00 In this scenario, the weight, brute strength,
10:08 and bravery of the lion
10:09 is what will determine the outcome of the hunt.
10:12 (gentle music)
10:15 However, the line between bravery and stupidity
10:27 can be thin, just as with humans.
10:30 Sometimes that courage kind of bleeds into foolishness
10:37 because sometimes they will try to catch a rhinoceros
10:40 or an elephant and they get killed.
