00:00 This is called PUT, and it's short for "Put it in the Box" here.
00:11 And it's a version of Eddie Field's Way Ahead card-to-card case.
00:17 And this particular approach to it allows you to isolate five cards, always show them
00:22 in order from 1 to 5, and then one of those cards will vanish and leave just the other
00:29 four cards that are on the list.
00:32 And so this kind of cleared up some problems I had with the original Eddie Field's method.
00:37 And I think you'll find it's an incredibly fooling routine.
00:40 If you do this for people, magicians or laymen, you can fool them very, very badly.
00:46 But you have to manage a few sort of hokey little things.
00:49 First of all, they have to write a list of some cards.
00:52 And you also have to get some information in a very bold way that requires a little
00:57 bit of acting.
00:58 So first of all, begin by borrowing a deck if you can.
01:02 If not, just use your own cards.
01:03 Throw them out, have someone shuffle them, put them back in the box, and throw them back
01:08 to you so that it's completely random when it arrives in your hand.
01:11 That's, to me, a very important thing.
01:14 Even if they're just sitting beside you, tell them to take the cards out, shuffle, put them
01:17 back in the box and put them down, then take out the paper and the pen.
01:23 When you remove the deck yourself, you're going to hold back by putting a little pressure
01:28 on that card here.
01:30 You're going to hold back the top card.
01:34 That's a completely random card.
01:36 And as I peek inside, I get to have a look to see that it's the Two of Spades as I close
01:40 the box and set it aside.
01:44 So I now know the Two of Spades is inside the sealed box.
01:47 And I take the deck and I simply find the Two of Clubs and control it to the top.
01:53 And then I can shuffle a little bit, just controlling that card all the time with an
01:58 overhand shuffle, like so.
02:02 I have them write down on the piece of paper the numbers 1 to 5.
02:07 And I instruct them very clearly.
02:09 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
02:12 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
02:17 And then I tell them, just circle any one of those numbers.
02:22 Now when they circle the number, it's important that you don't make any suggestion that they
02:27 should do so secretly.
02:29 Just say, circle any one of those numbers.
02:31 And they will then move to circle a number openly.
02:34 The instant you see them starting to circle one of the numbers, look away.
02:39 You're looking away so that when they look up, they can see that you're not looking at
02:43 what they're doing.
02:44 And then you can say, just turn that paper over.
02:47 Of course we're doing it with a sharpie so you could easily see which one was circled.
02:51 But you would do this with a normal pen.
02:54 So they circle one of the numbers.
02:55 Let's say it's number 4, which they've done.
03:00 They've done this and they turn the paper over so I can't see what they've circled.
03:05 I now tell them to cut the deck into 5 piles.
03:11 So let's say they cut like this.
03:13 There's 1, there's 2, 3, 4, and 5.
03:21 Now here's what's really nice.
03:24 The card that is going to end up inside the card case will be called from whatever number
03:31 of packet they've selected.
03:33 In this case they've selected 4, which was clearly cut from the middle of the pack.
03:38 That's an important point that you can make some hail of when you're doing the trick.
03:42 But that's up to you.
03:44 So 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
03:46 I know that 4 is what they're going to think of because I've seen that.
03:50 And I know that on top of number 1 is the 2 of clubs that matches colour and value the
03:56 card that's in the box.
03:58 So here's what I do.
03:59 I say I'm going to read out.
04:01 I don't let them see this.
04:02 I look at these cards.
04:03 I'm going to read out each one of these cards.
04:04 And I want you to note them down so you don't have to memorise them on that piece of paper.
04:09 And as I do that I get a little glimpse of the card that is actually at number 4.
04:15 That's the King of Spades.
04:16 So as I do this just as an action I get a note of that card.
04:20 Now here's what happens.
04:22 I turn over the first card and I say King of Spades, which is the card that I noted
04:26 down over here.
04:27 I don't call out this card.
04:29 King of Spades.
04:30 On the next one I'm fair.
04:32 I say King of Diamonds.
04:34 On the next one, and I also do this so I'm hiding that pip.
04:39 On the next one I say 5 of Spades and then I hide the rest of the cards.
04:43 So all you can see is that black 2.
04:46 Now here it's the King of Spades but I've already called that out over here.
04:50 So in this case I call out the card that's in the box.
04:53 2 of Spades and I put it here.
04:56 And then I take the last one and I say 9 of Hearts.
05:01 So I've called out all 4 of these and I've lied on this one but I've moved the lie to
05:07 exactly the right packet to here.
05:10 And what that means is if I were to take these cards, seemingly held at random, and then
05:17 close the deck, turn it over, I can show these and say look I'm going to take these cards
05:24 and I'm not saying look here's the cards.
05:26 Look look look because then they're going to notice that they're not seeing a card.
05:29 I'm just saying here's the cards, I'm going to place them face down on top like that very
05:34 openly, 5 cards, and cut them into the middle so that they're reversed like so.
05:40 Now here's the only real move in the routine and if you want to find a substitute please
05:44 do so but what I do is as I close these up I get a break above that packet and I pull
05:52 out with my pinky and my finger that card and I revolve it to the bottom of the deck.
06:01 So that's going to be the black 2.
06:04 So I cut these in, show them, with my pinky I pull that card out and the cover of the
06:09 right hand it revolves and goes to the bottom of the deck.
06:13 Now it's been righted.
06:15 And then I cut just a few cards like so.
06:19 And the reason for cutting some cards is so the bottom card is not that black 2.
06:24 So now when I say I want you to think of the card that's beside your number, at this point
06:28 they would have written down all of those cards.
06:31 The only one that we care about is the one beside what they wrote which will be the 2
06:37 of spades.
06:38 So remember the king of spades was here, the king of diamonds was here, the nine of hearts
06:47 was here and what was the other one?
06:49 Let's have a look.
06:50 My memory has failed me but it was the 5 of spades which was here.
06:58 So that's the list they have and you tell them to only concentrate on the one beside
07:01 the number that they completely chose at random.
07:05 So they chose to think of that.
07:07 When you spread you say okay let's make sure these are the other cards.
07:11 The king of diamonds, is that on the list?
07:13 Yes.
07:14 The 5 of spades, is that on the list?
07:15 Yes.
07:16 The king of diamonds, is that on the list?
07:17 Yes.
07:18 And of course the 9 of hearts is also on the list.
07:20 The only one missing is their card.
07:22 Now they'll go through the deck and find that it has completely disappeared and finally
07:27 you take the box, shake it, open it and take out the card they're thinking of, the 2 of
07:33 spades.
07:34 And that is a real, genuine, honest to goodness miracle that will fool people very, very badly
07:41 and it's called put.
07:43 Put.
07:44 Put.
07:46 Put.
07:47 Put.
