00:00 Hey guys, thanks for joining me on my mini lecture here at PenguinMagic.com.
00:11 I'm Brad Adams and I'm going to show you three tricks, two of which are card tricks and one
00:16 is a cool sharpie trick.
00:18 So let's get into the first one.
00:19 This is called Chaos and it was released originally on the 1914 in the UK and now I'm here showing
00:27 it to you.
00:28 So if I could get a volunteer please, Sean.
00:35 Thank you.
00:36 If you could do me a favor, just take out any card you like.
00:39 Actually that's too easy, I can see the card.
00:41 So take one out face down if you'd like.
00:43 That one right there, take a look at it, I don't want to see it.
00:51 And put it back in face down anywhere you'd like.
00:54 Right there.
00:55 Alright, now I want you to see there's nothing sticking out of the deck, nothing like that.
01:00 This is more of a skill than anything else but I'm going to try to do it right here.
01:08 One card.
01:09 Do you remember your card?
01:10 Yes.
01:11 What was it?
01:12 It was a five of diamonds.
01:13 Five of diamonds.
01:14 Yay, five of diamonds.
01:21 Thank you, thank you, thank you.
01:23 Alright, so how this works is the deck.
01:27 The deck is very, very not normal.
01:33 Half of the deck as you can see is completely ordinary but the other 26 cards are all duplicates.
01:45 So I'm completely cheating but it is fail safe, you're always going to get their card
01:49 100% of the time.
01:51 Actually that's not true, you can misgrave a card, I've done that a lot but it has played
01:54 out in my favor more than a few times so you should be fine.
01:59 To set up the deck you just need to get 26 regular cards, so 26 shuffled cards and 26
02:09 of the duplicate.
02:11 The DVD, if you purchased this from Penguin, should have come with a deck already set up
02:16 for you so you don't have to mess with it but if you want to make another one that's
02:20 how you do it.
02:22 The selection process is very easy, I turn the deck face up, spread through about 10
02:28 or so cards, tell them to pick a card and before they make a selection I say that's
02:33 too easy, turn it face down so they can select one face down.
02:39 And I spread through again about 10-15 cards and you want to make sure to go slow because
02:46 you don't want to go past the allotted cards that you have for them to pick out of.
02:53 So you go slow, have them pick one, it's always going to be the duplicate.
02:58 They can look at it, you don't have to see it for any reason and when you put it back
03:01 in the deck you just dribble the cards like this, they can put it back in anywhere they
03:06 like, the rest of the cards go on top.
03:10 That was the easy part, now is the hardest part of the whole routine, the catch itself
03:14 and you really are just catching it but the only trick is you want to start off holding
03:19 the deck face down in Biddle grip, just like this and you're going to dribble the cards
03:25 onto the table one by one and you're going to show the faces for the first 10 or 15 cards
03:32 and when you get near the halfway point you're going to rotate your wrist towards yourself
03:36 so that the faces can no longer be seen and all the cards are going straight down.
03:42 So let's pick up this mess, one second, and you're going to grab any card, any one of
03:49 the top 26.
03:52 So you have a lot of room to mess up or miss the area that they put it in so you just dribble,
04:00 rotate, grab one card out of the top 26 and it should match the selection perfectly.
04:08 So that is the main performance of it.
04:12 There are a few limitations to this, obviously because half of the deck is all of the duplicate,
04:18 you can't show the whole deck.
04:21 So to get around this and show the whole deck you can start off with the duplicate half
04:29 on the bottom of the deck and have a random card on the face of it so you can't see the
04:33 duplicate.
04:35 And to show it you just spread through the cards face down and you can pick up at random
04:40 places and show that the cards are different.
04:44 And to show the second half you do a, I believe it's a turnover pass, I think?
04:51 When you turn it, yeah, turn it like that, turnover pass, and show basically the same
04:57 half but from the face of the deck.
05:01 So it shows, looks like all 52 cards.
05:05 Alright so another thing to point out is spreading the deck in the beginning.
05:09 I choose not to spread it too much.
05:11 I try not to make a big deal and say that look every card is different.
05:16 That just seems unnecessary to me but to have them select a card in the beginning and show
05:21 that all the faces are different I think is a good convincer to show that they are all
05:26 different.
05:28 Just make sure you practice this enough before you go out to minimize the chance of messing
05:33 up the grab because that is the most important part.
05:37 Dribbling it is important in the sense that you have to turn your hand before you get
05:43 to the second half or it will be completely ruined because they'll see all of the duplicates.
05:49 And pulling the card out is also a technique that you have to practice because you can
05:54 easily bump multiple cards out or flip cards over by accident and that's just something
06:00 you don't want.
06:02 So to just practice, the catch is between your thumb and index finger so you just want
06:08 to be as quick as possible in and out to grab a card.
06:12 If you grab two you could even weigh out the difference of which one the card is if you
06:19 wanted to play it like that and either way it's going to be theirs but you could say
06:23 it feels like this one and that's their selection.
06:27 Okay so that was Chaos.
06:28 I hope you liked it.
06:30 Now on to the next one called Sharp and it is a Sharpie cap through your hand and you
06:35 can borrow the Sharpie.
06:37 This is what it looks like.
06:40 You take the cap off, you put it on the back of your hand and just like that it goes through
06:47 your fist and into your hand.
06:50 And it's the same cap and you can hand out the Sharpie afterwards.
06:54 Now the way this works is through the use of this rubber band.
06:58 I believe this is a size 19, it's a standard rubber band.
07:03 And you're going to start with it double looped on your middle ring and pinky finger of your
07:09 dominant hand and you want it close to the nail line as possible.
07:15 So as close to your fingertips so you can hold your fist like this and the rubber band
07:19 is not visible.
07:22 Now with the Sharpie it can be borrowed or you can have your own.
07:25 If you have your own it helps to bend the clip out a little bit at the bottom just so
07:31 it will catch on the rubber band better.
07:36 So that's basically just the setup and you're going to start with the Sharpie in your left
07:40 hand with the cap towards your left pointing away from you.
07:44 You're going to grab the Sharpie at the bottom with your right index finger, middle finger
07:48 and thumb.
07:50 You're going to pull the Sharpie down and hook it on the rubber band over the middle
07:59 finger portion, like over your middle finger.
08:03 So you just in one move swoop down and hook it on to the rubber band.
08:10 Once you hook it on you're going to rotate the Sharpie forward or away from you and re-grip
08:18 in your left hand you're going to let go of the rubber band with the rest of your fingers
08:21 and just hold on with your pinky.
08:25 The rest of your fingers will go over top of the rubber band like this concealing it
08:29 and you're going to hold it just like this.
08:32 Now you're in a pretty good position, it looks pretty clean.
08:35 If you do the move fast enough and clean enough there should be no suspicion at all.
08:40 So go ahead and take the cap off, you can set the marker aside anywhere you want and
08:45 now you're in this position.
08:47 You have the rubber band hooked on your pinky going through your hand to your fingertips
08:55 just like that.
08:56 You're going to grab the cap with your right hand now, your ring finger, middle finger
09:02 and index finger are going to be flat concealing this rubber band as it goes across your left
09:08 hand and you put the cap on the back of your left hand.
09:11 Now my thumb is concealing the rubber band going into my fist so it looks pretty good
09:18 from this angle and there are several ways you can push it into your hand or vanish it
09:23 or whatever you want to do.
09:26 The method for it is just letting it go and it shoots back into your fist so any way you
09:32 can make that look good you can push it through your hand but you have to be careful because
09:39 it will flash sometimes.
09:42 You have to make sure it goes straight in the back of your hand or you can as you bring
09:48 it up like this as it's out of eye line you just let go with your thumb so it pivots around
09:56 your thumb and goes back and that just looks like this.
10:02 As you come down it's gone.
10:04 I keep my fist completely closed, I rub to show that it has gone through and to show
10:09 you just bring it to your fingertips because it's still attached to your pinky, the rubber
10:13 band, you bring the cap to your fingertips, I put the marker back in and a good way to
10:20 get the rubber band off because it makes kind of a clicking noise is to take it off at the
10:26 same time you close the marker all the way so it can be camouflaged as the sound of the
10:33 marker closing.
10:35 So that is the main workings of that.
10:41 Here is another thing you can do with another sharpie cap, preferably matching or it would
10:47 look strange but this is for demonstration purposes so you're going to have it in your
10:51 right hand finger palmed and you're going to start the routine as normal.
10:57 You're going to loop it through and connect it to the rubber band.
11:02 Now at this point you're going to insert the marker into the cap that's in your hand.
11:07 So as you go to take the cap off, this is attached already to the back.
11:13 So if it's the same color, later on it will match, it will look identical.
11:16 So you go in, take the cap off and I put the marker in my mouth.
11:21 So by doing this the cap is hidden behind my fingers, I bring it up and I put it in
11:29 my mouth and this also keeps the cap covered.
11:34 Now there's not going to be a lot of attention on this so you don't really have to worry
11:37 about it but we'll set it there for the time being.
11:40 You do the routine as normal but instead of pushing it into your hand you can just make
11:43 it vanish and then instead of revealing it you can just point it up to your mouth and
11:50 show that it is on the back of the sharpie.
11:54 You close it up and then you can hand it to them and that way you don't have to worry
11:58 about ditching, about getting rid of the rubber band off the cap before you hand it out.
12:04 It's just immediate, clean.
12:08 Okay now to the last trick, Ascension, which is an impromptu rising card with a borrowed
12:12 deck.
12:13 It looks something like this.
12:16 You have any card selected, in this case the Jack of Spades.
12:22 The Jack is put face down into the deck about half way and with just a shake you can get
12:28 it to move up almost to the top.
12:31 Not quite but with one more shake you get it to move all the way to the top.
12:35 The Jack of Spades.
12:37 Now the way this works is basically it's an easier version of Ray Cosby's Raise Rise and
12:46 the main move looks something like this from the back.
12:50 You are just lifting up a small section, isolating a card and pushing it out.
12:55 So that is the main move there.
13:01 Is getting that card separated from the rest and pushing it out.
13:04 From the front it looks like, I don't know why I keep pulling, putting the card out in
13:10 the middle of the deck.
13:11 From the front it looks like this, just the move.
13:23 So this is basically what's happening behind the scenes.
13:27 You have two breaks, one is held with your pinky and that is just holding up the single
13:33 card that you are pushing out.
13:36 The rest of the deck is held up with your ring finger and it's all behind so when you
13:43 can do the move and you get your thumb in there and that allows you plenty of room to
13:48 push out this card.
13:50 So that's why there is so much room.
13:52 So with the Rising card all you have to do is somehow obtain a double lift.
13:59 They remember the card and it goes about half way.
14:02 You can start at the bottom and make it go up a little bit, a little bit more at a time
14:06 but that's a harder way to do it.
14:08 So I start off about half way.
14:12 I get a break above, I use the top two cards, I get a break above the second to top with
14:21 my pinky and the rest of the top card, yeah there we go, and the top card with my ring
14:31 finger.
14:32 So when you push out the second to top card you are pulling in this one and you kind of
14:39 go upwards in a motion to conceal the interchange.
14:46 So at a good speed it looks like it's traveling up through the deck and that's not through
14:53 the card obviously but the last move you just get a break above the top card which is their
14:59 card.
15:01 You put your left index finger at the top of the card and as you're shaking let the
15:06 top card fall over top of the second to top card which is out jogged and to clean it all
15:13 up I just push everything in with my index finger and at the same time pull off the top
15:18 card which is going to be their card.
15:22 Now there is a color change you can do with this.
15:26 So let's say you have a card that you want to change to on the bottom of the deck, I
15:32 usually put about two cards underneath that and then get a break with my thumb in the
15:40 back above the face of the card, the face card.
15:45 So now all you do is swing cut the deck over, take a look at whatever card you cut to and
15:53 you're going to out jog it just a little bit about I'd say a third of the way out.
16:00 You're going to put the rest of the deck on top and you're going to drop the whole pack
16:07 that your thumb is holding on top of the face up card.
16:12 Now you're going to pick up, you're going to lift up the face card and get your breaks,
16:17 hold everything just like that and then you're going to pull in the eight and push out the
16:23 king which if you don't get any extra cards out would look really good and since these
16:30 extra cards are here if you keep it square you can go through and it looks like there's
16:37 nothing else underneath it or you switched it for anything else.
16:41 So that is the basic stuff you can do with Ascension the Rising card.
16:47 I hope you like that.
16:48 I hope you like chaos and I hope you like the Sharpie cap through hand.
