00:02 Today's battle is going to be intense, because the two candidates for the title of the best

00:06 mammal in the world are very powerful, being the largest carnivores on land.

00:10 Allow me to introduce you to these amazing animals!

00:13 The brown bear versus the polar bear!

00:17 Also, stick until the end of the video to find out who is the winner of the last battle

00:20 between the jaguar and the leopard.

00:32 Before we start, you should know that the winner of Animal Battle isn't necessarily

00:35 the strongest.

00:36 We are going to evaluate all of them by six different characteristics.

00:40 Agility, attack, defense, intelligence, bonus skill and survival.

00:46 Also, an important thing to know is that there are many subspecies of brown bears found across

00:50 Eurasia and North America, like grizzly and kodiak bears.

00:53 But even though they might look different, they are all the same species.

00:57 Now that you know that, we can start.

00:59 Let's begin with agility.

01:00 Both of them can climb trees.

01:02 Polar bears can run with a speed of 40 km/h, but they are outspeeded by brown bears, which

01:07 can reach speeds of up to 55 km/h.

01:10 That is faster than a horse.

01:12 That makes brown bears great pets for putting.

01:14 But even though polar bears are slower on land, they are a lot faster in water.

01:18 Brown bears can swim pretty good, but polar bears are just incredible swimmers.

01:22 Being able to swim with a speed of 10 km/h.

01:25 They are made for that having a long skull and nose, a flexible neck and large front

01:29 paws.

01:30 They can swim for 7 to 10 hours per day.

01:32 The longest time recorded was 9 days.

01:34 That makes polar bears slightly better at agility.

01:37 Let's move on to attack and defense stats.

01:39 Both of them are really powerful.

01:40 This might be due to their large sizes.

01:43 Brown bears range a lot in sizes, reaching from 1.4 to 2.8 meters in length.

01:48 On average, they can weigh 115 to 360 kg.

01:52 But some individuals can be twice as big.

01:55 The biggest one recorded weighed 680 kg.

01:58 This is impressive.

02:00 But polar bears are even larger.

02:02 In fact, they are the largest carnivores on land.

02:04 They can reach 2.4 to 3 meters in length and can weigh around 350 to 700 kg.

02:10 The largest one recorded weighed 1002 kg.

02:14 Living in the Arctic region, polar bears usually hunt ringed and bearded seals.

02:18 In some cases, they can hunt even larger animals, like walruses and beluga whales, and if they

02:23 have a chance they can eat other mammals like reindeers.

02:26 Their most common hunting method is called steel hunting.

02:29 They use their smell to locate seal breathing holes and wait until the seal reaches up to

02:33 breathe.

02:34 That's when it attacks with a powerful bite directly into the skull.

02:38 Brown bears are omnivores, being able to eat almost anything from berries to fish and over

02:42 100 different species of mammals.

02:44 Searching for food, they can move very heavy objects and lift heavy rocks.

02:48 Even though they are not as large as polar bears, they have longer 7 to 10 cm claws.

02:53 Also, they are territorial and more aggressive, while polar bears are not territorial and

02:57 avoid fights.

02:58 I'll talk more about what happens when brown and polar bears meet later.

03:02 Brown bears have just a few competitors.

03:04 They can steal the prey from packs of wolves and can be killed just by other brown bears

03:08 or by tigers.

03:09 Polar bears on the other side don't have any competition, being the largest predators in

03:13 the Arctic region.

03:14 So we can observe that brown bears are slightly better at attack due to their aggression,

03:18 while polar bears are better at defense due to the lack of competition.

03:22 Because they are both predators, they are pretty intelligent.

03:25 Brown bears might have a larger skull, but this doesn't necessarily mean that they are

03:29 smarter, because, once again, having a bigger brain doesn't necessarily mean that the animal

03:33 is smarter.

03:34 So we can say that their intelligence level is pretty much the same.

03:37 Let's talk about bonus skills.

03:39 Both brown and polar bears live in regions where it can get really cold, so they have

03:43 adapted to that in two different ways.

03:45 When winter comes, brown bears don't need to search for food, especially hibernating.

03:49 For that, they have to eat a lot of food and gain a lot of fat before it gets cold.

03:54 Polar bears, though, live in regions where it's cold all the time.

03:57 That's why they don't have just one layer of coat, but also

04:00 another one, another one, and another one, and another one.

04:08 Actually, they have two layers of coat.

04:10 Also, their hairs aren't actually white, but transparent, which appear white because the

04:14 air in the hairs scatters all wavelengths of light.

04:17 And what color do you think their skin is?

04:19 It is black, which absorbs more heat to keep the body warm.

04:22 Plus a 5-10 cm thick layer of fat and you have everything you need to survive in cold

04:26 regions and to have more buoyancy when swimming.

04:29 And last but not least, let's talk about survival, because there's no use to have high stats

04:33 if a species is going extinct.

04:35 Brown bears, even though are hunted by humans, are doing pretty great.

04:39 There are about 200,000 of them in the wild, and it is listed as the least concerned species.

04:44 They also have a 25-year lifespan.

04:47 Polar bears are doing worse here.

04:49 Although they can also live up to 25 years in the wild, there are just 22,000-31,000

04:53 of them in the wild, being listed as a vulnerable species.

04:57 By 2050 their population is expected to decrease by 30%.

05:01 This is due to habitat loss caused by climate change.

05:03 They are usually walking on ice, but it is melting faster and some individuals can end

05:07 up swimming for days and starving to death.

05:10 So now more and more polar bears go and land further in the continent.

05:13 So their territories might overlap with those of brown bears, but surprisingly, the result

05:18 of their meeting isn't an epic battle, but a brown and polar bear hybrid, which is called

05:22 growler or peasly bear.

05:24 And these hybrids are actually fertile, meaning that they can reproduce, unlike other hybrids.
