Paralyzed man walks naturally after brain and spine implants
New research reveals how a medical device helped a paralyzed man walk naturally again, more than a decade after injury.

Dr. Grégoire Courtine and colleagues at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne have developed and implanted a "brain-spine interface" that creates a direct neurological link between the brain and spinal cord.
His legs were weak, as were his arms and trunk.

Oskam said he could walk at least 100 meters (about 330 feet), depending on the day, and stand hands-free for a few minutes.
Oskam was taking measurements the day after training.
Walking independently using the "digital bridge" also helped him regain enough strength to take a few steps even when he was off.
Expanding the reach of this connection could also help people with arm and hand paralysis or who have suffered a stroke, they say.
