Napoli fans stage bizarre ‘funeral’ ahead of Serie A title triumph and plan to celebrate in Mount Vesuvius volcano

If you thought Napoli’s Champions League exit may have dampened the excitement over their first Serie A title in 33 years, think again.

The Neapolitans may have been gutted to not make the European semi-finals due to defeat against AC Milan, but back in Italy, it appears everyone’s moved on.

Napoli have their first chance to clinch the title against Salernitana, should they win and second-placed Lazio fail to take victory against Inter Milan.

The match was scheduled for Saturday, but the team were able to move it to Sunday, with the possibility of celebrating in front of their home fans should Lazio fail in the morning kick-off.

The Stadio Diego Armando Maradona will undoubtedly be pumping pre-match for a first title since its namesake took the club to victory in 1987 and 1990.

But outside of the arena, there’s some strange goings on, as fans get ready.

A bizarre funeral has been held for the other 19 Serie A teams, with footage showing crosses with their logos on surrounding a coffin draped in opposition scarfs.

Meanwhile, at Mount Vesuvius, one of the world’s most famous volcanoes, fans have been warned away from celebrations at the site.

Calciomercato reports that fans are planning to simulate an eruption at the site with smoke bombs in the tricolore colours of the Italian flag.

The park has since issued a statement, saying: “The Park Authority considers this initiative dangerous and not practicable.

“It would take place in the heart of the park, in the area of maximum protection of a national park established in 1995 by decree of the President of the Republic, due to its vulnerability and importance in terms of biodiversity.

“We are coordinating with the local police forces of the Vesuvius municipalities and with the Vesuvius Park carabinieri department to ensure a massive garrison and the closure of the access areas to the crater.”
