00:16 Plus, they are excellent family dogs.

00:44 Alright, let's get into it.
00:47 Formerly known as the Russian Wolfhound, the Borzoi was developed in Russia by the aristocrats
00:52 of the day to be used as coursing and hunting dogs.
00:56 They would send these dogs out in teams to hunt rabbits, foxes, and even wolves.
01:01 However, over time, these dogs gradually came to be more popularly known as companion pets,
01:07 especially for royalty all across the continental Europe.
01:11 Fast forward to now and Borzois have become well known for their cool, calm, and collected
01:16 disposition.
01:17 You can only expect that after rolling with royalty for so many centuries, right?
01:22 Physically, a Borzoi has a lean, tall body with a long and narrow head and a silky coat.
01:29 You only need to take one look at a Borzoi to see that he is the very picture of elegance
01:34 and refinement.
01:35 The grace with which he carries himself throws you back to his glory days as a pet of the
01:40 royals.
01:41 But, though they are sweet and gentle, they are definitely not the pet for everybody.
01:46 We will get into that shortly.
01:48 Alright, so the Borzoi has certain unique characteristics.
01:53 They are usually laid back, but they are also swift runners too.
01:56 They typically prefer sprinting to marathons, though, and after a quick sprint, they are
02:02 content to just kick back and relax on their favorite sofa.
02:06 Now, even though Borzois are speedy runners, this does not mean that they are high-energy
02:11 dogs.
02:12 In fact, Borzois are couch potatoes and will never exhale even a tiny breath of complaint
02:18 if they have to spend the entire day with you in bed.
02:21 Talking about their personality, Borzois have a full range.
02:25 Sometimes they are stately and serious, other times they are just 100% clowns, but for the
02:31 most part, they are sensible, intelligent, and quiet.
02:35 Nevertheless, they do not appreciate being left alone for long periods.
02:39 With strangers, Borzois can be quiet or friendly, depending, although they are generally trusting
02:45 of people, but they are definitely not shy, just withdrawn.
02:49 Now, don't get it twisted, a Borzoi may be easy-going and laid back, but it does not
02:55 necessarily mean training them is always going to be a walk in the park.
02:59 These guys have minds of their own and can be stubborn.
03:03 Some people mislabel them as dumb, but they are far from that.
03:07 They just like to make sure that whatever you've asked them to do, works for them
03:11 before they do it.
03:13 Also, they easily get bored, especially if you're doing the same things again and again.
03:18 So make sure your training sessions are short and fun, and make sure you use positive reinforcement,
03:24 not intimidation.
03:25 When it comes to exercise, Borzois can either be lazy or self-driven.
03:30 The lazy ones must be walked at least 20 minutes per day.
03:33 The self-driven ones have no problem exercising themselves as long as they have the space
03:38 to do so.
03:39 Just make sure the yard is well-fenced, you know they have this instinct to chase.
03:44 Now let's talk about house training.
03:47 Borzois are not exactly tough to house train, but you want to crate train these guys to
03:52 keep them from getting themselves into trouble when you're not around to supervise them.
03:56 Also, keep in mind that Borzoi puppies take their sweet time to mature, so the destructiveness
04:03 that comes with puppyhood might not go away as quickly as you might expect it to.
04:09 One thing you can do to help your Borzoi puppy is to provide them with plenty of companionship
04:14 and exercise.
04:15 Of course, we can't talk about the Borzoi without talking about the natural gift of
04:19 athleticism.
04:21 Borzois are naturally gifted in canine sporting activities.
04:25 They do fantastic in the show ring and would easily give any other breed a run for their
04:30 money when it comes to obedience, agility, and rally.
04:34 Nevertheless, the area of their greatest strength remains the lure coursing field because it
04:39 allows them to express that inborn instinct they have to chase.
04:43 In fact, till now, in certain western states, Borzois are used to hunt jackrabbits in open
04:49 field coursing, while others use them to protect their animals from coyotes.
04:54 Finally, let's talk about grooming.
04:57 A Borzoi comes with a long, silky coat, which would need brushing with a pin brush every
05:03 week.
05:04 This breed sheds heavily seasonally, and during those periods, you have to brush more frequently.
05:10 And of course, it goes without saying that if you are allergic to dogs, then the Borzoi
05:14 might not be the dog you want.
