A tornado has swept through Oklahoma killing at least two as it levelled communities across the state.

Authorities have confirmed the deaths of at least two people after the twister made its way through rural areas of Oklahoma City, USA.

Footage shows the tornado in the skies above Norman and Slaughterville.

Additional footage of the damage in Cole, where the two confirmed deaths occurred.

The National Weather Service warned locals on Wednesday (April 19) that the twister was behaving "erratically" and urged people to take shelter in the area.

Tornado warnings have since been downgraded but more than 7,000,000 people in the surrounding states of Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri are subject to a severe thunderstorm watch.

Authorities said the tornado cut a path two miles wide and 10 miles long in the area and it is estimated that 20,000 residents have been left without power.
