magnitude 6.4 earthquake shook parts of Northern California early Tuesday, jolting people awake, the U.S. Geological Survey said, and tens of thousands were without power afterward.
No injuries were immediately reported following the earthquake, which occurred about 2:34 a.m. near Ferndale, a small community about 213 miles northwest of San Francisco.

The quake was reported at 2:34 a.m., about 7.5 miles southwest of Ferndale, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. No tsunami was expected, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office said on Twitter, but the agency advised residents to prepare for aftershocks.
Emergency dispatchers received two reports of injuries, including a broken bone and a head injury, with both patients expected to survive, said Samantha Karges, a public information officer with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. There were no immediate reports of fatalities, according to the Sheriff’s Office, which said it was still gathering information from local dispatchers.
There was, however, extensive damage to roads and homes, Karges said. Most of the destruction is in Rio Dell, Fortuna, Ferndale and Scotia in the Eel River Valley.
