Raised on hip-hop and foster care, defiant city kid Ricky gets a fresh start in the New Zealand countryside. Nachdem es bereits durch zahlreiche Pflegefamilien gereicht wurde, bekommt das rebellische und trotzige Problemkind Ricky auf dem Land die Möglichkeit zu einem Neuanfang. Bei der liebevollen Bella dem mürrischen Outlaw Hec und dem Hund Tupac fühlt sich der Stadtjunge zum ersten Mal in seinem Leben gut aufgehoben und gewinnt an Selbstvertrauen. Doch als es eines Tages zu einer Tragödie in der neuen Familie kommt, die für Ricky einmal mehr einen Umzug und eine neue Pflegefamilie bedeuten würde, flieht er gemeinsam mit Hec vor den Behörden in die neuseeländische Wildnis. Während das ungleiche Paar im Busch von einer chaotischen Situation in die nächste stürzt, wird eine großangelegte Suchaktion initiiert, um die beiden vermeintlich hilflosen Vermissten zu retten.
