Im Jahr 1945 befindet sich Jerusalem noch unter britischem Mandat. Hierhin flieht die jüdische Familie Oz, die davor recht wohlhabend in Polen gelebt hatte. Der kleine Amos sieht sich selbst als Handwerker oder Bauer und nicht in den Fußstapfen seines Vaters, der sich mehr schlecht als recht als Schriftsteller behauptet. Amos’ liebende Mutter Fania ist es, die in ihrem Jungen die Faszination für den Zauber von Geschichten weckt – obwohl sie selbst eher enttäuscht ist von dem Kurs, den ihr Leben genommen hat.
