This is an exploration of the great if eccentric British painter J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) during the last quarter century of his life. Profoundly affected by the death of his father and loved by a housekeeper he takes for granted and occasionally exploits sexually, he forms a close relationship with a seaside landlady with whom he eventually lives incognito in Chelsea. Throughout this, he travels, paints, stays with the country aristocracy, visits brothels, is a popular if anarchic member of the Royal Academy of Arts, has himself strapped to the mast of a ship so that he can paint a snowstorm and is both celebrated and reviled by the public and by royalty.

Der Maler William Turner führt um das Jahr 1825 ein bewegtes Leben: Neben seiner Kunst der Landschaftsmalerei widmet er sich Reisen, Bordellbesuchen und Zusammenkünften mit dem Landadel. Der Künstler kostet seine Freiheiten aus, an der Londoner Royal Academy of Arts tritt er sehr großspurig auf. Er ist alles andere als diplomatisch und mit seinem eigenwilligen Verhalten stößt Turner so manches Mitglied der ehrenwerten Gesellschaft vor den Kopf. Und auch im Privatleben ist der Umgang mit dem kauzigen Maler überaus schwierig. Er teilt die Wohnung mit seinem Vater William und seiner Haushälterin Hannah Danby, deren innige Zuneigung er schamlos ausnutzt. Als der Vater schließlich stirbt, gerät William Jr. in eine tiefe künstlerische und persönliche Krise.
