Im viktorianischen London des 19. Jahrhunderts heiratet Euphemia "Effie" Gray schon jung den bekannten Kunstkritiker John Ruskin. Doch die Ehe wird nie vollzogen und nach Jahren voller Enttäuschungen, Schmerz und Leid, verliebt Effie sich in einen von Ruskins Schützlingen, den Maler John Everett Millais. Nur unter schwerem gesellschaftlichem Druck und mit Unterstüztung ihrer Vertrauten Lady Eastlake gelingt es Effie schließlich die Verbindung zu Ruskin annullieren zu lassen und eine zweite Ehe mit Millais einzugehen. Das konservative Großbritannien ist entsetzt.
