Qawwali maestro Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's Best Collaborations with Western Artists| Michael Brook
  • last year
Did you know that Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was featured in the soundtrack for Martin Scorsese’s 1989 film, 'The Last Temptation of Christ’? This is just one example of Nusrat's willingness to collaborate and experiment with other musicians. He is known mostly as a classical musician but he was also very open and experimental throughout his career. In one interview, Nusrat said, “I will carry on with different experiments between two cultures as long as I live.”

The 90s was an era of great musical exploration for Nusrat. He was featured in the soundtrack for 1995 film, ‘Dead Man Walking’ where he sang with Eddie Vedder on the song, ’The Face of Love,' and sang on a Pearl Jam song, 'The Long Road'. He also worked with Peter Gabriel for the soundtrack of Oliver Stone's film 'Natural Born Killers.'

His most iconic collaborative work was when he and Canadian musician Michael Brook - two artists from opposite ends of the world - teamed up on a pair of albums; 1990's 'Mustt Mustt' and 1996's 'Night Song'. 'Night Song' was nominated for a grammy and it was Nusrat's last studio album before his death the following year. Check out the beautiful music video for their song 'Longing" from their last album together, 'Night Song', shown above. It was filmed in Pakistan in 1996.

Through these various collaboratations and musical experimentations, Nusrat introduced qawwali to the West. It also proved that it didn't matter what the context was or where the audience was from, Nusrat's voice was above it all.
