The death of a former pope overshadowed the new year celebrations at the Vatican. News of the death of Pope Emeritus Benedict the 16th came days after Pope Francis asked for prayers saying he was very sick.

The remains of Pope Benedict will be placed in St. Peter's Basilica beginning today for the faithful to bid him farewell.
