Memorial held for 2004 Boxing Day tsunami victims in southern Thailand

Footage shows a memorial in southern Thailand today for the victims of the Boxing Day tsunami which killed at least 225,000 people.The tidal wave triggered by an earthquake flooded busy tourist resorts in Phuket and Phang-nga province, where officials today laid wreaths and said prayers for those who died. Buddhist, Christian and Islamic religious leaders joined the memorial ceremony.Large numbers of holidaymakers were swept away by the deadly deluge. Thailand suffered an estimated 8,212 deaths while in neighboring Indonesia there were an estimated 167,540 deaths. Fifteen countries were affected by the magnitude 9.1 - 9.3 earthquake, which struck northern Sumatra, Indonesia, and caused massive tremors across the region.
