The United Nations' aid chief has urged the international community not to ignore the devastating drought and hunger crisis facing east Africa.

Martin Griffiths of the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said the world has not been paying enough attention to crises beyond the war in Ukraine.

Twenty million people in the region are at risk of severe hunger, according to the UN.

Ethiopia is facing the country's worst drought in half a century, while 40 per cent of Somalia's population is facing food insecurity.
