Khewra Salt Mine is located in Jhelum district of the Pakistani province Punjab, Khewra is a town with Muslims population, north of River Jhelum in the Salt Mountain Range, an outer range of the Himalaya Mountains which rises from the Indo-Gangetic Plain. It is 30 Km away from Lilla interchange M2 motorway and 6 Km from Pind Dadan Khan. It is the world's Second Largest and the oldest salt mine.
underground water is not drinkable due to salt, a pipeline provides Drinkable water from Meetha Patan a few Km away from mine.
The mine is famous for its production of pink Himalayan salt, and is a major tourist attraction, annually 200,000 + foreigner and local tourist visit it. The mine was discovered not by Alexander the great but his army's horses when they were found licking the stones in 320 BC During the Mughal era the salt was traded in various markets, as far away as Central Asia. On the downfall of the Mughal empire, the mine was taken over by Sikhs. The main tunnel at ground level was developed by Dr. H. Warth, a mining engineer, in 1872 during British rule. 1890 Khewra Railway Station Building was built for the transportation of Salt. After independence, the Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation took over the mine,
Khewra mine is 288 meters above sea level and 730 meters into the mountain from the mine entrance. The underground mine covers an area of 110 km2.
The mine comprises nineteen stories, of which eleven are below ground. From the entrance, the mine extends about 730 meters (2440 ft) into the mountains, and the total length of its tunnels is about 40 km.
Estimates of the total reserves of salt in the mines range from 82 million tons to 600 million tons. The mine's output is 385,000 tons of salt per annum, which amounts to almost half of Pakistan's total production of rock salt. At this rate of output, the tunnel would be expected to last for another 350 years. The temperature inside the mine remains about 18–20 °C (64–68 °F) throughout the year.
It is a major tourist attraction in Pakistan. earning it considerable revenue. Visitors are taken into the mine on the Narrow Gauge electric Khewra Salt Mines Railway. There are numerous pools of salty water inside, Badshahi Masjid, minaret Pakistan, Sheesh Mahal, China wall, and More in my Pakistani travel Vlogs.
