Tommy Leblanc, is sent to Springboard, a juvenile detention and rehabilitation center, after what is only the latest troubling incident in his long-troubled life. His parents, Luc Lebeau and Sonia Leblanc, both have substance abuse issues and are no longer together, and he is living in the foster care system. Tommy's educator, Gilles Séguin, is allocated to each boy at Springboard for one-on-one attention. The severe regulations of Springboard all focus on mutual respect, with any violation of the rules usually resulting in the withdrawal of any privileges and placement in isolation, with the level of isolation determined by the nature of the act. While many of the children are restless by nature or because of undetected psychological difficulties, Tommy pushes it to a new level for Gilles and Springboard. Tommy routinely verbally abuses, and some of those are very violent. The tiniest provocation can set off those eruptions. Gilles is frequently perplexed since, except for a smattering of facts about Tommy's parents, he is unaware of Tommy's background, and Luc, the only mother whose location is known, appears hesitant to be a part of Tommy's life in any way. Gilles questions Dr. Michèle Bergeron's approach to dealing with Tommy after taking him to the facility psychiatrist. Tommy's presence at the facility is already taking its toll on him and the rest of the staff, and Dr. Bergeron's recommendation would add an extra level of devoted attention and probable disturbance, potentially negatively impacting the treatment of the other youngsters. Tommy may experience a future where there is no turning back to hope if Gilles cannot reach Tommy through Dr. Bergeron's strategy.
