The situation is tense in Lakhimpur Kheri a day after eight people were killed on Sunday as violence erupted during a farmers' protest.
Security was beefed up outside the residence of Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, who had announced that he would visit Lakhimpur. The former UP chief minister sat on a dharna outside his home after police stopped him from leaving for the violence-hit district.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi slammed the BJP government for detaining sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra after she evaded house arrest and attempted to go to Lakhimpur Kheri to meet families of the victims.
