John McEnroe Jr. was born in February 16, 1959 in Wiesbaden.
His father was on the US Air Force and was stationed in Germany at the time. A year after, the family moved to New York City.
He started playing tennis at 8 and won his first Grand Slam at 18 (mixed doubles French Open titles with Mary Carillo).
He’s considered one of the greatest players of all time and a true genius of the game.
His net game was what differenced him from other players and used every opportunity to get close to the net.
He was famous for his artistic playing style and deftness.
But also, for losing his temper on court resulting him many fines and suspensions.
The classic Wimbledon 1980 final disputed between McEnroe and his rival Bjorg Borg is considered one of the two greatest tennis matches of all time and inspired the movie “Borg vs McEnroe”.
McEnroe is now retired and a well-respected TV commentator and sometimes competes on senior tours.
