Next week at It's Mime Time! we welcome two artists: Tony Montanaro with “The Golfer” and Karen Montanaro with “Silent Movie Starlet”.
Tony Montanaro born in New Jersey1927 and passed away 2002 was a famous american mime artists and partner and husband of Karen Montanaro, creator of “Mimedance” the fusion of ballet and mime.
Tony Montanaro earned a theater degree from Columbia University. In 1956 he was strongly impressed by Marcel Marceau's historic performance. So, Montanaro flew to Paris to study under Marceau and Marceau's teacher, Etienne Decroux. Montanaro had a long career of well-received performances in Europe and the United States. In 1962, he starred Off-Broadway in a one-man show called A Mime's Eye View and he designed and hosted the award-winning CBS-TV children's show, "Pretendo". After performing and teaching around the world, in 1972, he founded the Celebration Barn Theater, a theater/school of mime, improvisation, storytelling and other performing skills. Today, the Barn is an international residential center for theater training and creation, continuing Montanaro's legacy.
His wife Karen Hurll Montanaro already has been on stage at It’s Mime Time! with A wonderful world. She started her work in physical arts by studying ballet at various dance schools in North America and Eruope. When she met Tony Montanaro she began studying, teaching and later performing mime together with Tony Montanaro.
The couple Montanaro toured widely with their two-person show, The Montanaro-Hurll Theatre of Mime and Dance. In 1995, the Montanaros authored “Mime Spoken Here”: The Performer's Portable Workshop, a guide to the craft of mime, character work, and improvisation, and a pair of accompanying instructional videos.
Now, Karen tours the world with her one-woman show titled ‘Tanzspiel’. Karen blends the art forms of mime and dance to create theater with physical and emotional power.
Look forward to our double feature Tony Montanaro with “The Golfer” and Karen Montanaro with “Silent Movie Starlet”!
