The baby elephant that was separated from its herd on Tuesday (December 29) has been rescued and shifted to a nursery.

The elephant calf was separated from its herd after a group of elephants had strayed into the Tampara Lake near Sunapur village under Chikiti Block of Berhampur.

The baby elephant was part of the herd which sneaked into the locality and subsequently entered the lake causing extensive damages to prawn enclosures and fishing boats. However, the calf got stuck in a marshy part of the lake.

The calf had suffered injuries while coming out of the lake after which some fishermen and locals of Sunapur village rescued it and tried to leave it near the mother elephant.

Somehow, the baby elephant could not reunite with the heard and her mother despite repeated attempts.
