Bilkis Bano, Shaheen Bagh Protests 'Dadi' Attempts To Join Farmers' Protest, Sent Back By Police
  • 3 years ago
Bilkis Bano, the octogenarian who became the face of the months-long anti-citizenship law protest in the capital's Shaheen Bagh locality, was on December 1 stopped by Delhi Police from joining the ongoing farmers' agitation against the Centre's new agricultural laws. She was stopped by the police at the border point at Singhu. At the peak of the Shaheen Bagh protest last year, Bano was recognised by Time magazine one of the 100 most influential people of 2020, alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bollywood actor Ayushman Khurrana. Meanwhile, farmers' representatives have turned down the centre's second pitch for a committee to discuss the contentious farm laws, protests against which are intensifying by the day. A second meeting will be held on December 3. More farmers from Punjab and khaps from Haryana are making their way to the national capital, demanding that the laws be repealed. The farmers have said they will continue the protest if their demands are not accepted. Reportedly, Agriculture minister Narendra Tomar had suggested the formation of a committee, asking farmers to put down the names of their representatives who would be part of it.
