A thunderous sound panicked people in Paris on Wednesday left everyone baffled. It was later revealed by the police that the loud sound was caused by the sonic boom of a fighter jet breaking the sound barrier. The military said the jet had been scrambled to go to the aid of another aircraft that had lost radio contact and was authorised to travel at supersonic speed. Paris police told people to stop calling emergency phone lines. The noise which was heard all over the city and neighbouring suburbs, shook windows. No detail was given on the type of aircraft or the nature of its difficulty. The spokesman said the fighter emitted its sonic boom over the east of Paris.
