WHO to make 120 million rapid diagnostic tests for COVID-19 available to low, middle-income countries

The World Health Organization says 120 million rapid COVID-19 test kits will be made available for the world's developing nations,... in a move to curb the further spread of the virus.

The WHO says it will make rapid COVID-19 diagnostic tests available to low and middle-income countries at an affordable cost.
"I'm pleased to announce that thanks to an agreement between WHO and partners here today, and others, a substantial proportion of these rapid tests - 120 million - will be made available to low and middle income countries."
Describing it as "good news,"... the chief of the international body stated during a press briefing Monday that they will be provided over the next six months,... starting from October.
WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus explained that they will be rolled out to some 133 countries, at a maximum cost of 5 U.S. dollars per unit.
He also stressed that the test kits will guarantee reliable results in approximately 15 to 30 minutes,... compared to some tests that take hours or days.
This, he highlighted will enable more extensive testing,... which is vital in cutting the chain of transmission in many areas.
Also at the briefing, the organization's top emergencies expert, said the official global death toll from the coronavirus probably underestimates the true total,... suggesting it could be over a million already.
