U.S. Federal agents have taken over the Chinese consulate in Houston as of Friday local time, following an order that it cease operation amid espionage allegations.
Beijing, however, has not released an official statement regarding the shutdown.
The action comes after China hit back at the U.S. by ordering the shutdown of its consulate in the southwestern city of Chengdu.
Also on Friday local time, the FBI arrested ( )Tang Juan, a Chinese researcher who took refuge in China's San Fransisco consulate after allegedly committing visa fraud.
She was accused of concealing that she served in the Chinese military in the entry process.
A senior Justice Department official said she will appear in court on Monday, but added that the arrest was not a tit-for-tat move as tensions between Washington and Beijing simmer.
