We find a lot of things above ground mysterious enough, but if archaeologists are to be asked, more
mysteries actually lie beneath the earth. Today we will be looking at 9 of the strangest boxes found
under the earth. Number one is an enduring mystery to this day so stay tuned for that.

Number 9. Boxes of Cryptids
OK, I’m cheating here a bit. But since the find was in a basement, they can be considered under the
earth right? Besides, this find is completely strange and I’m sure you’ll want
to find out more about it.
In 2006, construction workers were bulldozing a place to make way for a new suburban block. All of a
sudden, they came across an old mansion which used to belong to a man named Thomas Theodore
Merrylin. IN the old basement, they came across a number of peculiar wooden boxes. Thinking that they
came across something valuable. Like gold or treasure, the workers started to open the boxes one by
one. They weren’t prepared for what they would find.
Inside the boxes were the mummified remains and skeletons of creatures we now call cryptids;
creatures that are thought to be mythological yet to be discovered by science. The boxes contained
skeletons of fairies and dragons, and a few other creatures that were quite difficult to describe.
Since their discovery, the collection has sparked an animated debate between naturalists. While some
truly believe that the find will forever change science, others dismiss it as an elaborate hoax. But to me,
the bigger mystery is what were those boxes doing in the basement? And what kind of person is
Merrylin to have such a collection?
Number 8. The Granite Boxes of the Serapeum
When a pyramid is being excavated, it’s inevitable that something mysterious is going to be unearthed.
But this next discovery has baffled even the most seasoned Egyptologists for decades. I’m talking about
the strange granite boxes found within the Serapeum of Saqqara in Egypt.
They were discovered in 1851 by French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette around 15 miles south of Giza,
which plays host to Egypt’s best-known pyramid site. After some well-placed detonations, Mariette had
unearthed an ancient burial ground known as the Serapeum of Saqqara. Then, within the burial ground,
there are the huge stone boxes that make the Serapeum truly special. The receptacles are hewn from
granite and are truly massive, with the largest among them weighing in at
