Dr Tedros is the first WHO Director-General to have been elected from multiple candidates by the World Health Assembly, and is the first person from the WHO African Region to serve as WHO's chief technical and administrative officer.

टेडरॉस, इथोपिया के टिगरे पीपुल्‍स लिबरेशन फ्रंट (टीपीएलएफ) के सदस्‍य हैं। इस पार्टी ने साल 1991 में इथोपिया के कम्‍युनिस्‍ट तानाशाह मेंगइत्‍सु हाएले मरियम को सत्‍ता से बेदखल कर दिया था। टेडरॉस पहले ऐसे डब्ल्यूएचओ महानिदेशक हैं जो विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठन में कई उम्मीदवारों को हराकर चुने गए थे। इस पद पर पहुंचने वाले वे अफ्रीकी क्षेत्र के पहले व्यक्ति हैं।
