The death toll in the United States shot up by more than 850 on Tuesday alone, by far the most for a single day, as the country raced to build hundreds of makeshift hospitals near major cities as healthcare systems were pushed to capacity.

Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said the US should be prepared for 100,000 deaths as a result of Covid-19.
