With the FMX 650, in 2005 Honda wanted to make the supermotard fun accessible to everybody. The engine was the single cylinder air cooled four stroke of 644 cc which powered the NX Dominator in the 80’s and 90’s and later the SLR650 and Vigor. None of these bike has ever been good looking or fashionable, but talking about effectiveness and reliability, these models were unbeatable. The FMX made no exception. Power output was a moderate 37 hp as emphasis was on torque where a decent 52,3 Nm was available at only 4,500 rpm. These modest figures, compared to the more powerful Domy, were due to the need to comply with the new European anti pollution standards. However, technical components and ridability of the FMX were one step beyond compared to the ancestors Domy and SLR: the aluminium spoke rims, Renthal handlebar, inverted 45 mm forks and the front floating disk brake are a good example of this. And Mr. FMW confirms that, with just few adjustments, and without recurring to Cosworth's engineers, the engine can easily express all its potential, reaching at least the 45 hp of the Dominator.
