Each year over 12 million women and men are victims of intimate partner violence according to National Domestic Violence Hotline as quoted in May 2019 CNN reports. Over 35% of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence.
In this episode of "Beyond My Crisis with Ron & Vivian" our guest is Kim Tuon- Mennella who has survived both the Cambodian genocide and severe domestic violence in several forms as a young bride who pressured into an arranged marriage in the U.S. at 17 years old while still in high school. Mrs. Tuon-Mennella shares her very inspirational story of how her mother risked torture and death to ensure Kim and her sisters did not starve to death as very young children and then how she found the courage to escape her highly abusive marriage where her husband was regularly beating and violently raping her as a 17-year-old child bride as her 2-month-old baby was on the bed beside her.
Mrs. Tuon - Mennella is here to bring awareness to one of the big misnomers of domestic violence that rape is possible inside a marriage. It is estimated that 10-14% of wives are raped by their husbands as part of their domestic violence.
Mrs. Tuon-Mennella also shares the specific and often overlooked ways to keep safe after finding the courage to escape domestic violence. Mrs. Tuon -Mennella is one of the few coaches who are available to help those seeking to escape, stay safe and live full and happy lives after domestic violence.
