Hong Kong New Year’s Day march cut short, descends into chaos

An approved New Year’s Day march from Hong Kong’s Victoria Park to Chater Road in Central was abruptly cut short by police three hours after it began, as violence broke out on the sidelines.  Protesters had gathered en masse in Victoria Park on January 1, 2020, to press their demands for an independent inquiry into police action, amnesty for those arrested and universal suffrage.
