2019 평화&SDG 세계시민 축제 개막
Back in 2015, the United Nations outlined its 17 sustainable development goals... to promote human development, environmental protection on top of economic growth.
A two-day event is being held at the National Assembly in Seoul to raise more public awareness on the matter.
Our Lee Kyung-eun was there and files us this report.
Hundreds of people came out to attend the 2019 Peace and SDG Global Citizen Festival on Saturday,... in hopes of doing their part to address a number of important global issues.
"KOICA has organized the event to help South Korean people think about their responsibilities in achieving sustainable development goals as global citizens. It reminds us of our global citizenship."
Out of the 17 sustainable development goals laid out by the UN, the two-day event mainly focuses on gender inequality, climate action, income inequality, and fair institutions.
Here, people can learn more about them through engaging in hands-on activities,... from making their own eco-friendly bag and soap,... to designing shoes for children in developing countries.
It was also a platform to bring together global citizens,... including those from developing nations that receive official development assistance via the Korea International Cooperation Agency,... South Korea's aid bureau.
"I came here because purposely I believe the SDGs are helping the world and they are helping us to sustain each other, and I have engaged in some of the activities. Here, I have a tattoo here on gender equality - SDG5, and I believe if all understand that we are all equals, and we respect each other, we will have a lovely world.
Many participants offered to get more directly involved in the initiatives,... learning about ways to take part in various overseas volunteer programs.
The highlight of the event will take place in the evening,... with the opening ceremony, a bicycle parade, and a K-pop concert all in the schedule.
"In the past few days, various events advocating peace were held across the country, including one commemorating the 1st anniversary of the historic inter-Korean summit in Pyeongyang. And today's event will hopefully add an exclamation mark as we close out the week of peace."
