Hi Conn-young, today I'm going to introduce a film festival with the unique theme of food
It's the Seoul International Food Film Festival, which takes place from this Friday September 6th to Thursday September 12th at Seoul Namsan Gukakdang and Daehan Cinema in Chungmuro. First held in 2015, the festival hopes to understand and communicate various aspects of life and culture from around the world through a familiar medium of food and film.
It's a non-competitive international film festival with competitive section, and aims to raise awareness on sustainable and healthy eating. It is meant to be a relaxing experience where people can simply enjoy films and food.
A total of 67 feature and short films from around the world will be presented along with sideline events like cooking and tasting events and guest talk shows.
The highlight of any film festival is usually the opening film. Which film will open the festival and what's special at this year's festival?
This year's opening film is 'Food Fighter' by Australian director Dan Goldberg.
It's a documentary film about the environmental problems caused by food waste while some people in Australia still have difficulty securing enough food to eat each day.
A special reception party, Australian Night, follows the screening to celebrate the food, films, lifestyle and culture of Australia.
Also marking the 100th anniversary of Korean film, some classic Korean films about food or related issues from the 1950s to the 1990s are being shown. It will be a chance to explore and understand the changes in Korean society and culture through food and film.
You mentioned various sideline events at the festival. What are some of the major events you would recommend?
The signature program of the festival is a dining cinema where audiences can watch movies and enjoy the food that is featured in the films. A total of 8 dining cinema programs are offered at two locations, the courtyard of Seoul Namsan Gukakdang and the rooftop of Daehan Cinema.
On the cinema rooftop, more light drinks and finger foods are available like craft beer, wine or traditional Korean liquor with snacks. If you want to have more than just snacks you can try programs at Gukakdang that offer Australian barbeque, French cuisine, Spanish and Korean dishes along with beer, wine or Korean liquor.
Because there are a limited number of seats for these programs, those interested should make a reservation at the festival's website. Tickets for the dining cinema range from 15,000 to 30,000 won which is about 12 to 25 U.S. dollars.
