Grace Poe pokes holes at Cunanan testimony

MANILA - Sen. Grace Poe on Thursday noted several discrepancies in provisional state witness Dennis Cunanan's testimony, particularly his omission that he had met Janet Lim Napoles in her office in Discovery Suites. Poe noted that Cunanan did not include in his affidavit filed before the Office of the Ombudsman that he had met Napoles in the JLN Group of Companies office at Discovery Suites. Instead, Cunanan only noted that he met Mrs. Napoles in the TRC when the businesswoman would make representation before the then TRC director general. Asked why he did not mention his meeting with Mrs. Napoles at Discovery Suites, he said: "Wala ho kasing ganun sa allegations." Asked directly if he met Napoles in the JLN office, he said: "Rine- recollect ho namin yung situation. Most likely may chance na once, part of our inspections sa institutions na nag i-implement tinignan na regular ang operations." "Maaari (kaming nagkita)," he added. Cunanan said a 5% service fee that TRC receives from NGOs is not automatically reflected in the yearly balance sheets of the agency since the operations should first be liquidated. Poe also questioned Cunanan's income and how he is able to maintain a home in a posh subdivision. Cunanan had said the home he is occupying is owned by his brother. The senator said that even without paying rent, Cunanan would have to spend a lot of money for the house's upkeep. She expressed doubt that Cunanan paid only P10,000 a month on electricity bills. "Imposible yung P10,000 sa ganung klaseng bahay. May dating yung bahay e. Kung ganun lang, magrereklamo ako sa Meralco bakit ganun," she said. Poe expressed frustration that Cunanan seemed to be contradicting the statements made by pork scam whistle-blower Benhur Luy after the latter accused Cunanan of pocketing P960,000 in the scam. "I wish to reiterate it is not and will never be my intention to derail the investigation but I think we will be remiss to the people if we don't question Mr. Cunanan very well. The last thing we would like, and the people don't deserve this, is for another witness to poke holes in the testimonies of our other star witnesses," she said. She also noted that among the two new witnesses in the scam, only Cunanan has stated that he did not receive any kickbacks from Mrs. Napoles. Socialite Ruby Tuason earlier said she received P40 million from the scam and promised to return it to the government. ANC, March 6, 2014
