Amar Maa Je Gopal Sundari

Aamar Maa Je Gopal Shundori is a song written and composed by Kazi Nazrul Islam on Maa Kali. This beautiful composition describes Maa Kali’s various forms and draws a parallel with Lord Krishna. In the poet’s eyes, Maa Kali is a combination of the dusky deity and the blue Lord Krishna, man (purush) and woman (naari), digombori and peetaambor (again referring to Krishna). She is also portrayed in dual light, as the soft, loving mother and woman as well as the powerful destroyer of evil, as the one with the fiery ‘Ogni Tilok” on her forehead and also the one with the peaceful and calm ‘Chondrolekha’, a perfect and divine combination of strength and devotion. The poet accentuates the simplicity of the composition with the unique and distinctive depiction of Maa Kali. Set in Raag Malkauns, the composition brings out both gravity and substantiality as well as delicacy and ethereality. Taal Rupak adds a lilting touch to the song.
