Japanese artists, activists to publicly urge re-display of comfort women statue at Aichi Triennale
  • 5 years ago
A petition in Japan calling for its biggest international art festival to bring back a statue symbolizing victims of Japan's wartime sexual slavery, known as 'comfort women', has received nearly thirty-thousand signatures in three weeks.
On Monday, artists and activists who organized that petition will hold a press conference at the local government office of Aichi Prefecture where the Aichi Triennale is held.
They will urge the festival organizers to re-display the 'comfort women' statue.
The statue was on display for three days at the festival when it opened on August first,... but was removed due to "terror threats" and a Japanese government order to remove it.
