Greece declared a state of emergency as firefighters continued to battle wildfires on the island of Evia (Euboea), north of Athens. Officials said hundreds of people from at least four villages were evacuated. More than 200 firefighters and 15 aircraft were sent to the affected areas.
Greece's Civil Protection authority appealed for help from European countries with planes being sent from Croatia and Italy.
