1999 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಜಮ್ಮು ಕಾಶ್ಮೀರದ ಕಾರ್ಗಿಲ್ ಪ್ರದೇಶವನ್ನು ಪಾಕ್ ಸೇನೆ ವಶಪಡಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ ಕಾರಣ ಉಭಯ ದೇಶಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ಆರಂಭವಾದ ಯುದ್ಧ ಮೇ ಯಿಂದ ಜುಲೈ ತಿಂಗಳವರೆಗೆ ನಡೆದಿತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಭಾರತ ಪಾಕ್ ಸೇನೆಯನ್ನು ಹಿಮ್ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ಸಫಲವಾಗಿ, ಜುಲೈ 25 ರಂದು ವಿಜಯ ಪತಾಕೆ ಹಾರಿಸಿತ್ತು.
