Hong Kong protesters bang bamboo poles and improvised drums before police force the crowd into retreat.

A rally against a China extradition bill -- now suspended but which protesters fear could be revived -- drew huge numbers earlier in the day.

Some protesters remained on the streets after the main rally ended, as police in riot gear came onto the streets in greater numbers.
