Herold-Quadrille, Op. 157 - Josef Strauss

  • hace 5 años
"Herald Quadrille". On 23 January 1864, the Strauss brothers, Josef and Eduard, organized a monster Masked ball in the Sofiensaal, titled, "carnival storm with lightning, thunder and hail". Appearing on the invitations was the explanation: "A carnival burlesque patterned after typical Italian main Street festivals". It is noteworthy that Johann apparently had no part in this ball, although he was employed as ball director during the carnival season of 1864. Only five works by Josef and two by Eduard Strauss were promised. The Herold-Quadrille appeared in the dance repertoire as the latest new work by Josef Strauss. The title page of the piano score of the work, which was issued in May 1864 by Verlag C.A. Spina publishers, shows one angel with a trumpet against a backdrop of clouds, and another with a beribboned Lance. This quadrille is not as stormy as this picture would make one suppose, but it does velon among the composer's most spirited and charming works.
