U.S. Army to deploy pocket-sized drones to Afghanistan

KABUL — The Black Hornet nano-unmanned aerial system will be deployed to troops in the 82nd Airborne Division in Afghanistan this month on a trial basis, Stars and Stripes reports.
The unmanned aerial drone is 6.6 inches in length and weigh less than 33 grams, Army Technology reports.
The device features two electro-optic cameras and a fused thermal LED light night imager.
According to Army Technology, this allows the aerial vehicle to transmit HD videos using night vision to allow soldiers to survey their surroundings while in combat.
The drone can be launched in 30 to 120 seconds with a flight endurance of up to 25 minutes. The device is capable of flying at speeds of up to 24.49 kilometers per hour with a range of 2 kilometers.
The U.S. Department of Defense plans to extend the use of the hand-held drones to most of its ground force if the trial proves successful, according to Army Technology.
